Athletic Trainer’s Corner

What do Athletic Trainers do?

Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations.  As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.  The NATA Code of Ethics states the principles of ethical behavior that should be followed in the practice of athletic training. – National Athletic Trainer’s Association

Description automatically generated with medium confidence

“As a physician, I believe spending time with patients is a very important part of the doctor-patient relationship. This includes education about injuries or disease process, as well as taking time to listen and understand concerns.

I am a primary care sports medicine physician with emergency medicine training. I provide non-surgical treatment of sports injuries and illness including concussions, overuse and acute injuries and everyday musculoskeletal ailments for people of all ages. I strive to promote and maximize health and fitness, with regard to injury prevention, diet, and exercise.

I earned my MD at Temple University School of Medicine and completed a residency in emergency medicine and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine both at St. Luke’s.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, who is the apple of my eye. I enjoy anything related to exercise and being outside, taking in the fresh air. Over the last several years I have developed a green thumb maintaining my yard.” – Dr. Burkey
